Physical Skills Testing Requirements - English

The physical portion of the 3rd kyu brown belt test is conducted in Japanese. English is provided here as a means of learning the material; however students should be prepared to hear all testing instructions in Japanese.

Basics

Any combination of punches, blocks, strikes and stances. Combinations may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Single, double or triple punches; stationary reverse punch; traveling reverse punch; lunging reverse punch.
  2. Single, double or triple blocks; block, reverse punch, strike; strike, reverse punch, block; block, strike, block.
  3. Single, double or triple strikes..
  4. All stances in japanese, including those primarily performed in kata, moving forward and backward.

Combinations

  1. Outside block, elbow strike, back knuckle strike, reverse punch
  2. Knife hand block, any single or double kick off the lead leg, to spear hand thrust
  3. Kata sequences

Kicks

  1. Any double kick combination using the same leg. Combinations may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  2. Perched kicks - stationary (front, round, side, back 5 times each leg)

  3. Any double or triple kicks using alternating legs, such as front, round, side, back

Kata

  1. Testing Kata Bassai-Dai and all previous katas.
  2. Be prepared to interpret sequences out of any of the Heian katas, Tekki Shodan or Bassai Dai.
  3. Be prepared to perform any Heian kata in reverse form.
  4. Prepared interpretation of any kata, Bassai Dai or below, using three partners.

Fighting Stances

  1. Lunge punch to jab, step up round kick to spinning back kick.
  2. Lunging reverse, reverse, round kick to spinning back kick.
  3. Lunge punch, switch, reverse, side thrust kick, to shuffle up back kick
  4. Jab, step up round kick, switch, reverse punch to side thrust kick to spinning back kick.
  5. Reverse ppunch, step up front kick to lunge punch, reverse punch.
  6. Front kick to lunge punch, reverse punch to round kick.

Self-Defense

  1. 10 multiple movement self-defense techniques with a partner. Do not have more than 3 take-downs. All techniques are choreographed.

  2. Single line drill.

  3. Circle drill.

Bag Work

Any combination of stationary kicks and/or punches; one on one sparring; two on one sparring, and four corner bag work.

Kumite

Free sparring and 5 step sparring.
