5th Kyu Testing Requirements

The physical portion of all tests, 5th kyu and above, are conducted in Japanese. English is provided here as a means of learning the material; however, students should be prepared to hear all testing instructions in Japanese.

Prepare for this test well in advance; there is a great deal of additional material. Start by choosing a self-defense partner and choreographing your self-defense routine. Also, memorize all Japanese terminology.

A written test will be given several weeks prior to the physical portion of the test. Students must pass the written test with 80% or better to be eligible to take the physical test.

Students are expected to know all 10th, 9th, 8th, 7th and 6th kyu testing requirements. In addition, students should know the following additional 5th kyu requirements:

Punches and Strikes

Blocks

Kicks - Alternating Legs and/or Same Leg Combinations

Combinations

Fighting Stances

The word "to" indicates that you should continue on with the next move in the combination without setting in a fighting stance first. (The word "to" will not necessarily be said during the test instructions.)

A "," indicates that you should return to a fighting stance (set) before continuing with the next move in the combination. (The word "set" will not be said during the test instructions.)
