Brown Belt Testing Requirements

There are three components of the brown belt test: written questions, physical skills, and oral questions.This page includes instructions and links to the physical skills testing requirements for 3rd, 2nd, and 1st kyu brown belt tests.
Read all the following information carefully. Students are responsible for knowing all preliminary, pretest, and testing requirements.

- Prepare for your pretest my selecting your self-defense and kata interpretation teams.
Students should select people who are senior ranking to them.
- Testing students should pick their teams as soon as possible and prepare typed, written instructions
for all team members and the Sensei.
- It is the responsibility of the testing student to organize their teams and plan for practice time
convenient for all team members.
Pretest Instructions
- Students must take a physical pretest three to six months before their actual belt test. The pretest usually consists
of a practice written test (sample questions) and a practice physical skills test (physical skills requirements). Students will be informed at this time as to there
readiness to test.
- Impromptu kata interpretation will be a part of the pretest.
- Students must take a written test (sample questions) approximately four weeks prior to the physical belt test. Students must answer 80% of the test correctly
to be eligible to take the physical belt test.
- Students should prepare for the oral component of the examination. Students are responsible for answering any
questions that pertain to kihon, kata, kumite, bag work, self-defense and martial arts philosophy. These questions may come from the sample written
questions above, or may be questions made up by the black belts conducting the test. Be prepared for anything.
- The Sensei, and all team members, should have a final typed, written copy of all self-defense techniques and
kata interpretations.
- This is the actual physical part of the brown belt test .
- 3rd Kyu Physical Skills
- 2nd Kyu Physical Skills
- 1st Kyu Physical Skills
- Arrange for your self-defense partner and your kata interpretation team to arrive prior to your test for review and warm-up.
- Brown belt tests usually last between 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Testing students should wear formal, heavy weight, white gi's
(cleaned and pressed). If your gi has stains - buy a new one.
- Test results are usually announced one week after the physical test.
